Flaws

this great post by zachklein prompted me to think of my own top 3 flaws (of about 3,000).

1. i am too considerate

believe me when i say this is a flaw. in theory someone who listens and considers other people’s opinions as carefully as one’s own sounds great, and it can be. most of the times, however, it comes down to the fact that this is a failure on your part to realize that’s not what you’re hired to do. unless you’re a drone, you are hired because the organization value your craft and expertise in a particular field. you are expected to lead first and foremost in this area, not to accomodate or compromise.

2. i am too deliberate

logic is comforting because it tends to be far more binary and justifiable than working off what your gut tells you. it has served me well and it will always have a place in the type of work i do with the level of precision i need to strive for. but it can also be a trap from time to time that keeps you from outputting more innovative work. and that’s a disservice to yourself.

3. i never forget

in professional settings, i would like to think that i’m a rather understanding person. people make mistakes as i do and they should be forgiven as i should be. but there are certain types of people i have no patience for. namely, people who confuse decency with weakness and tries to exploit it. these people’s names get a star on my shit list and they never ever get crossed off. i will be cordial and professional with you, but when the light goes out you’re still that asshole who did a terrible thing to another human being that i can’t seem to forget or forgive.
